What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are ideal for covering teeth that have become damaged or compromised. If a tooth breaks, cracks or has recently been root canaled, we will recommend that a crown be placed. Crowns are made of realistic-looking materials that are both durable and long-lasting. Your new crown can easily last for decades before it may need to be replaced with a new restoration.
Why would Dental Crowns be needed?
Dental crowns offer both cosmetic and restorative benefits to your smile. Not only do they help to build up the size and shape of a damaged tooth, but they can make your smile fuller and more comfortable. Some of the reasons you’d need a crown include:
- A tooth has broken or cracked
- You recently underwent a root canal
- A tooth has a large amount of filling material in it
- A tooth has an enormous amount of decay in it
- You need to have an older dental crown replaced
Who is a candidate for Dental Crowns?
We can examine your teeth to determine if a dental crown is needed. Most patients who need a crown can safely come in to have the procedure done. Crowns are durable, so you can expect them to last for years while providing you with consistent daily wear. Crowns can be placed over virtually any tooth within the mouth that requires this restoration.
What happens during the Dental Crown procedure?
We numb the area with a local anesthetic before beginning the procedure. We then file down the tooth to create a small foundation for the crown to sit over. Impressions are taken and then used by a lab technician to craft the brand new dental crown. You’ll come in for a second appointment to have the permanent crown placed. We adjust the way that it sits on the tooth as well as how you’re able to bite. You are then able to leave our office with the confidence in showing off your new smile.
